3 things we learned from Barcelona capturing Copa del Rey with a 3-1 win over Athletic Bilbao
Everyone figured Barcelona would win this one easily, and that’s exactly what they did. They’re the Copa del Rey champions after sweeping aside Athletic Bilbao with two first-half goals, earning a 3-1 win and a shot at a treble when they play in the Champions League final next weekend.
The start of the match was a little dull, with Barcelona taking their time to slowly feel out Athletic Bilbao. The Basque team were trying to slow down and frustrate Barcelona while looking for opportunities to get forward. While Barcelona were certainly slow early on, that seemed to be mostly of their own doing, and they certainly didn’t seem terribly frustrated.
Then Barcelona got bored, and when Barcelona get bored, bad things happen for their opponents.
Lionel Messi opened the scoring with an incredible goal that came at the end of a crazy run that saw him beat basically the entire Athletic Bilbao team on his own. He started out on the right and steadily picked his way in towards goal, ducking and dodging and dipping past one Athletic player after another before unleashing a shot through the narrow gap between the near post and goalkeeper Iago Herrerin. It was jaw-dropping, highlight reel stuff, even for a player who’s done as many incredible things as Messi.
Barcelona started hammering at Athletic’s defense after that, coming inches from scoring a second goal over and over and over again. It finally came with less than 10 minutes left in the half, after a series of one-touch passes left Athletic’s defense dizzy and Iago pulled way out of position, giving Neymar an easy tap-in goal.
They tried to add a third before the break, but couldn’t quite pull it off, settling their 2-0 lead. In the second half, Barcelona tapped on the brakes a bit, not pushing as hard and looking as though they were happy to settle for keeping the score at 2-0 unless an obvious chance presented itself. When one did in the 74th minute, who else was there but Messi to snap in a pull-back pass to put Barcelona up by three goals and put any question of the result to rest.
Athletic would get a goal back when IΓ±aki Williams flicked a header past Marc-Andre ter Stegen off a cross, but by then it was too little, too late for the Basque club. There just wasn’t enough time left to do much more, and the match ended with Barcelona controlling things as easily as they had done all day long. The late minutes of the match were marred by a scuffle when a number of Athletic players were incensed at Neymar after he showboated with a two-footed flick of the ball over a defender’s head. Neymar just walked away when multiple Athletic Bilbao players confronted him, but several other Barcelona players had to fend off shoves and screams as Neymar was pursued quite a ways by their opponents.
Barcelona lift their 27th Copa del Rey title, good for four more than second-best Athletic, and eight more than arch-rivals Real Madrid in third. This

3 things
1. Barcelona are ridiculously good
Athletic were always facing a mountain to climb just to have a hope of beating Barcelona, but once the Catalans got rolling, it wasn’t even a fair fight. Athletic defenders and midfielders were left spinning around in confusion when Barcelona passed circles around them, or when Barcelona attackers dribbled past them, or eventually when Barcelona players just looked at them funny. Even when Barcelona took their foot off the gas in the second half, Athletic Bilbao were still forced to defend desperately and struggled to get their attack going. Their goal was about as much of a consolation goal as you’ll see
2. Iago Herrerin kept the match from getting too out of hand
The goals that Barcelona scored weren’t really anything Iago could do much about, but the only reason Athletic weren’t down by six goals going into halftime was because of their goalkeeper. He made four excellent saves in the first half to give Bilbao some faint hope of staying in the match, and he deserves a lot of plaudits for his performance in goal. If not for Iago, this match would have been a laughable landslide very early on.
3. The Champions League final is now a duel for a treble
Barcelona have won La Liga and the Copa del Rey. Juventus have won Serie A and the Coppa Italia. It’s not often that we get to watch two sides battle not just for the Champions League trophy, but for the rare honor of a treble as well. It’s not like Barca and Juve needed more incentive to win, but seeing two titans of the game slug it out in a match that’s even more meaningful than it would normally be, well, that’s going to be a special treat in Berlin.
